Getting Started
How do I download Virginia Family Law Toolkit?
Virginia Family Law Toolkit is available on the App Store for iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Search for "Virginia Family Law Toolkit" or visit the App Store link on our website. The app requires iOS 26, iPadOS 26, or macOS 26 or later.
What devices are supported?
The app runs on iPhone, iPad, and Mac devices with:
- iOS 26 or later
- iPadOS 26 or later
- macOS 26 or later
For the best experience, we recommend iPhone 17 Pro or later, iPad Pro (M5), iPad Air (M3), or any Apple Silicon Mac.
How do I set up my attorney profile?
Open the app and navigate to Settings. Enter your attorney name, Virginia State Bar number, firm name, and contact information. This information is used to personalize PDF documents and form footers.
How do I create my first client and matter?
From the main screen, tap Matters and then the "+" button. Enter the client name, opposing party name, case number, court, and your client's role (Plaintiff, Defendant, Petitioner, or Respondent). You can then attach calculations, deadlines, and documents to this matter.
How does the client intake questionnaire work?
The client intake questionnaire is a web-based form you can send to clients before their consultation. It collects personal information, employment details, income, assets, debts, and children's information. When the client submits the form, the data is sent to your email via EmailJS. You can then import the data into a new matter in the app.
Support Calculators
How does the child support calculator work?
The calculator follows Va. Code Ann. § 20-108.2 using the 2025 Virginia Child Support Guidelines (effective July 1, 2025). Enter each parent's gross monthly income, the number of children, health insurance and childcare costs, and the custody arrangement. The app looks up the basic child support obligation from the guidelines schedule and calculates each parent's share based on their percentage of combined income.
What custody types are supported?
The app supports all three custody arrangements under Virginia law:
- Sole custody (Va. Code Ann. § 20-108.2(G)(1)): One parent has primary physical custody
- Split custody (Va. Code Ann. § 20-108.2(G)(2)): Children are divided between parents
- Shared custody (Va. Code Ann. § 20-108.2(G)(3)): Each parent has 90 or more days of custody, uses the 1.4x multiplier
How is spousal support calculated?
Spousal support follows the pendente lite guideline formula under Va. Code Ann. § 16.1-278.17:1:
- With minor children: (Payor gross × 26%) − (Payee gross × 58%)
- Without minor children: (Payor gross × 27%) − (Payee gross × 50%)
This is a guideline amount. The court may deviate based on the facts and circumstances of the case.
What is the retroactive support calculator?
The retroactive calculator determines arrears when support should have been paid from an earlier date. Enter the monthly obligation, start date, and any payments already made. The app calculates the total amount owed including any credits for payments made.
How do I generate an income and expense worksheet?
From a support calculation, tap the PDF export button and select "Income & Expense Worksheet." The app generates a court-ready PDF with all income sources, deductions, and monthly expenses formatted per Virginia court requirements.
Pretrial and Scheduling Orders
Which court templates are included?
The app includes pretrial order templates for:
- Chesapeake Circuit Court (Contested Divorce)
- Norfolk Circuit Court (Civil)
- Suffolk Circuit Court (Divorce)
- Virginia Beach Circuit Court (Scheduling Order)
- Virginia Beach Circuit Court (Court Pretrial Order)
- Virginia Beach J&DR Court (Pretrial Order)
Additional templates are added regularly. You can also use the Custom Pretrial Order Builder for any Virginia court.
How are deadlines calculated?
Enter your trial date and the app subtracts the required number of calendar days for each deadline. If a deadline falls on a weekend or Virginia court holiday, it is automatically adjusted to the previous business day. The app uses the current Virginia court holiday schedule.
Can I export deadlines to my calendar?
Yes. After calculating deadlines, tap the calendar export button to add all deadlines to Apple Calendar or download an .ics file for Google Calendar or Outlook. Each event includes the deadline description and case reference.
How does the custom pretrial order builder work?
The custom builder lets you define your own deadline schedule for any court. Add deadline items with the number of days before trial, a description, and any notes. The app calculates all dates from your trial date with the same business day adjustments used by the built-in templates.
Equitable Distribution
What is the Brandenburg analysis?
The Brandenburg analysis walks through the 10 statutory factors under Va. Code Ann. § 20-107.3 that Virginia courts consider when dividing marital property. The app provides a structured worksheet for each factor with text fields for your notes and arguments.
What property schedules are available?
The app generates three equitable distribution schedules:
- Property inventory: Marital and separate property with classification, valuation, and proposed distribution
- Debt schedule: All marital and separate debts with responsibility assignments
- Retirement schedule: Pension and retirement account details with coverture fractions
Data and Privacy
Where is my data stored?
All case data is stored locally on your device using Apple's SwiftData framework. Data never leaves your device unless you enable iCloud sync, in which case it is encrypted end-to-end and synced only between your personal Apple devices.
Does the app collect any data?
No. Virginia Family Law Toolkit does not collect, transmit, or have access to any client data. We do not use analytics, tracking, or advertising SDKs. The only network requests the app makes are for iCloud sync (if enabled) and optional third-party integrations you explicitly configure (Clio, OneDrive).
How does iCloud sync work?
If you are signed into iCloud on your devices, the app can sync your matters, calculations, and deadlines across iPhone, iPad, and Mac. All data is encrypted end-to-end by Apple's CloudKit framework. You can disable sync in Settings.
How does the app lock feature work?
Enable app lock in Settings to require Face ID, Touch ID, or your device passcode each time you open the app. This prevents unauthorized access to client data if your device is unlocked.
How are Social Security numbers handled?
When generating PDF documents, the app automatically redacts Social Security numbers to show only the last 4 digits (e.g., ***-**-1234). Full SSNs are never printed on any exported document.
Integrations
How does Clio Manage integration work?
Connect your Clio Manage account in Settings by signing in with your Clio credentials. Once connected, you can import matters from Clio into the app. The integration is read-only and optional.
How does OneDrive upload work?
Connect your Microsoft OneDrive account in Settings. Once connected, you can upload generated PDFs directly to a folder in your OneDrive. This is useful for storing documents alongside your case files in your firm's cloud storage.
Are integrations required?
No. All integrations are completely optional. The app works fully offline without any external service connections. Clio and OneDrive integrations are convenience features for attorneys who use those services.

How much does the app cost?
Virginia Family Law Toolkit is available with two subscription options:
- Monthly: $27.99/month
- Annual: $249.99/year (save 25%)
Both plans include a 7-day free trial and full access to all features on all your devices.
Is there a free trial?
Yes. Both the monthly and annual subscriptions include a 7-day free trial. You will not be charged during the trial period. If you cancel before the trial ends, you will not be charged.
How do I manage or cancel my subscription?

How do refunds work?
Refunds are handled by Apple. To request a refund, visit reportaproblem.apple.com and select your purchase. Apple reviews refund requests on a case-by-case basis.
Can I use the app on multiple devices?
Yes. A single subscription covers all your personal Apple devices: iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Sign in with the same Apple ID on each device and the app will be available. With iCloud sync enabled, your data stays up to date across all devices.
What happens to my data if I cancel?
Your data remains on your device after cancellation. You will retain read-only access to existing matters and calculations. To restore full functionality, resubscribe at any time.
Troubleshooting
Common issues and how to resolve them.
App Crashes on Launch
Force-quit the app and reopen it. If the issue persists, restart your device. Make sure you are running the latest version from the App Store and that your device meets the minimum requirements (iOS 26+).
Calculation Results Seem Incorrect
Double-check all input values, especially income amounts and the number of custody days. Ensure you have selected the correct custody type. If the issue persists, email us with your inputs and expected result and we will investigate.
iCloud Sync Not Working
Verify that iCloud is enabled in your device Settings under your Apple ID. Check that the app has iCloud permission enabled. Make sure both devices are connected to the internet. Sync may take a few minutes for large datasets.
Clio Integration Errors
Sign out and sign back into Clio in the app Settings. Verify your Clio subscription is active and that you have API access enabled. If you see "unauthorized" errors, your Clio session may have expired.
PDF Generation Fails
Ensure your device has sufficient storage space. Try generating the PDF again. If the issue persists, check that all required fields are filled in for the selected form type. Contact us if the problem continues.
